Step-by-Step for what I did to root + install HTC Desire GingerBread ROM+Sense3.0 with Apps2SD+ and AdFree rom with access to HTCSense.com (original ROM from michaelm_007) - also included the link to the video tutorials.

01 - Download the RUU
- Download the latest RUU so you have something to return back to stock if rquired.
- Latest non-branded FroYo is 2.29.405.5 - available here:

02 - Remove HTC Sync if Installed
03 - Download and install modified HTC drivers
- Download driver from unrevoked website - available here:

04 - Prepare phone for Rooting
- Go to Settings -> Connect to PC -> untick 'Ask Me' if ticked, and set 'default connection type' to 'Charge only'
- Go to Settings -> Applications -> Tick 'Unknown Sources' if not ticked
- Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Tick 'USB Debugging' if not ticked
- Connect Phone to PC and allow drivers to install if required (skip windows update if it pops up)
- Reboot phone while connected to PC, if possible enter boot loader (hold Vol-Down and power on) - allow drivers to install, then reboot phone again back into normal mode to allow drivers to install correctly (skipping windows update if it prompts)
05 - Download Revolutionary Tool
- Download from http://revolutionary.io/
- Generate a Beta key as per the website (you will need HBoot version and Serial)
- You can get HBoot version from power on phone and holding Vol-Down
- You can get serial from settings -> about phone -> phone identity -> device serial number
- You can (probably) also get this information from connecting phone to PC via USB cable and running the revolutionary.exe (it should list these at the start and then ask for the Beta Key.
06 - Run Revolutionary tool
- Connect phone to PC with USB cable and leave on Charge only.
- Run Revolutionary software and follow instructions on screen (basically enter the Beta key and then hit ok and wait awhile)
- This will start by running an exploit, s-off (unlock bootloader) the phone, then prompt to download a recovery image...
07 - Install custom recovery (Clockworkmod Recovery)
- After the bootloader has been unlocked revolutionary should ask if you want recovery installed - say yes
- This will go to the web and download a recovery image and flash it for you.
- Optional: You can optionally install root to the current ROM on the phone by flashing this from clockwork recovery - http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip - covered in the next section.
08 - NANDroid Backup (optional)
- You can turn off phone, vol down + power on, select recovery, then select backup and restore, and create a NAND backup of your current phone settings (this is saved to SD card in a folder called ClockworkRecovery)
- This should allow you to restore back to current state, but I have found it caused a boot loop with my phone stuck at HTC logo so may be best to do this right before flashing a new ROM - at step 17)
09 - Backup your SD Card data to PC
- Take all the data off the SD card that you want, pictures, music etc.
(Recommended way)
10 - Download gparted for Partiting SD
- Some people claim you can partition within windows using tools like MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, but it is always advised to use gparted
- Download gparted and burn to CD from the ISO from here:

11 - Partitoning SD
- Connect phone in USB Storage mode to laptop and boot to Gparted CD
- In GParted accept all defaults
- Ensure that the SD Card is set as the device (not your laptop/pc HD!)

- Remove all partitions from SD card
- Create a new FAT32 partition at the start of the SD Card - this MUST be the first partition on the SD card, but leave <2048MB of space at the end (recommended 1536MB, but 1024MB can be used, but NOT MORE than 2048MB)
- Create a second partition for EXT3 with the remaining space.
- Apply
- Shut down gparted
(Alternative Way - from within Windows)
10 - Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
11 - Remove all partitions from SD Card
- Create a new FAT32 partition at the start of the SD Card - this MUST be the first partition on the SD card, but leave <2048MB of space at the end (recommended 1536MB, but 1024MB can be used, but NOT MORE than 2048MB)
- Create a second partition for EXT3 with the remaining space.
- Apply
12 - Download ROMs + extras

14 - Copy ZIP's to SD
- In USB Mass storage mode copy the 4 zip's to the root of SD card. Simples. (should be the only things on there.)
15 - Flash ZIPs
- Boot phone into Clockwork Recovery (Vol down + Power on) (use vol up/down navigation to get to recovery, and then trackwheel as navigation when in clockwork recovery)
- NAND backup (optional - see step 08)
- install zip from sdcard
- select zip
- RADIO.zip
- ... should say successfully installed on the text at the bottom when completed
- install zip from sdcard again
- select zip
- RIL.zip
- ... should say successfully installed on the text at the bottom when completed
- reboot recovery
- Wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- advanced -> wipe dalvik cache
- install zip from sdcard
- select zip
- ALIGNMENT.zip
- ... should say successfully installed on the text at the bottom when completed
- install zip from sdcard again
- ROM.zip
- ... should say successfully installed on the text at the bottom when completed
- install zip from sdcard again
- select zip
- KERNEL.zip
- ... should say successfully installed on the text at the bottom when completed
- Reboot now
16 - WAIT while ROM adjusts itself
- the ROM may hang on the HTC white screen for about 5-10 minutes (apparently can hang for 20 minutes sometimes) it will also restart around 3 times, while it sorts out the SD-EXT partition, and re-arranges itself on the phone
- Go through the wizard to set up phone, and leave it on for 30 mins - 60 mins while re-downloading apps etc. and setting up phone as it may freeze/hang for a few seconds while it is still reconfiguring itself and settling down.
17 - You are done. You can now restore your SD Card settings and set up your phone again. (note ADFree is installed and when opening will update the hosts and ask for superuser permissions to download+install hosts and block those pesky adverts)
Although I recommend downloading 'battery calibration' app from here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration
and running that through after a day or so to recalibrate the battery.
You can delete the zips from the SD card if you like.
NOTE: You do not need to move Apps to the SD like previously (applications -> move to SD), the ROM has Apps2SD+ built in so the system will handle that on your behalf, applications should still display (on phone)

Xoom WiFi (Non-US, i.e. UK/CAN) 3.0.1 -> 3.2 in a Few Easy Steps
To get from 3.0.1 Non-US image to a US image (GED) - I followed the following steps... please note - it is highly recommended you do some Google searches, and/or search XDA for if this will work on your region if you are not on a UK based Xoom...
1. Back up any stuff you want to a PC, make notes of apps you might want to re-install etc. This will wipe and factory reset the Xoom including storage on the Xoom
2. Unlock the device via Fastboot:
2a. Download the Motorola USB Drivers from here: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/ (you may need to sign up, but can probably find these elsewhere via Google if need be.)
2b. Download the Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html (you only really need fastboot so might be best to grab the zip version), else you may need the Java SDK too.
2c. Power off your Xoom
2d. Press and hold Volume Down while pressing (and holding) the power button to turn on the device (you can let go of power when the device comes on)
2e. Open a command prompt window (cmd)
2f. browse to your sdk\tools folder, i.e. c: -> cd sdk\tools etc.
2g. type: fastboot oem unlock
2h. Read the warning on the Xoom screen, Volume Down button to change selection, Volume Up to select.
After 2. you will be unlocked, but have no warranty from Motorola unless you lock again (fastboot oem lock) with your region's image.
3. Flash the Official, complete US 3.0.1 HWI69 Image
3a. Download the Image files here: http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/
3b. You will probably want to grab a copy of your region's image if available, as well as 'Build HWI69 for US Retail' image: http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/MZ604_HWI69.zip/
3c. Extract the .img files from the zip, boot.img, system.img, recovery.img, userdata.img and put them in the same location as fastboot.exe (for ease)
3d. You should still be in fastboot mode (from 2), enter these commands one at a time followed by enter/return (waiting for them to complete before running the next command):
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
(DO NOT RUN fastboot oem lock as written on the motorola developer site)
3e. Reboot device either with hold Volume Up and Power, or fastboot reboot
3f. Run through and set up the device as new.
4. OTA Update to 3.1
4a. Either let the system update itself OTA (took me about 5 minutes for it to come down) and follow on screen instructions to update to Honeycomb 3.1
4b. OTA file is available here: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/motorola_tervigon/e379f0b9bcd0.signed-tervigon-HMJ37-from-HWI69.e379f0b9.zip
4c. If you are interested in Rooting, custom kernel etc. read this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14237506&postcount=7
5. OTA update to 3.2
5a. Either let the system update itself OTA and follow on screen instructions to update to Honeycomb 3.2 ... or... my OTA had not come down after about 2 days, so found the next method to work (you will need a USB flash stick, and an OTG USB Host Cable)...
5b. Download the OTA from here: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/motorola_tervigon/db223b6ed7c4.signed-tervigon-HTJ85B-from-HMJ37.db223b6e.zip
5c. Put the .zip above on to the USB flash stick.
5d. Power off the Xoom
5e. Plug in the USB flash stick to the OTG Cable and into the Xoom
5f. Power on Xoom and tap Volume Up when Motorola splash screen is on and it should have a bit of text at the top left showing 'Recovery'
5g. When you see the Android logo with the exclamation mark, hold Power button and tap Volume Up to enter Recovery
5h. Volume Down, to select 'Apply update from USB drive'
5i. Press Power to select, and let it apply the update. If it fails try re-downloading the .zip
5j. Reboot and you should now be running Honeycomb 3.2, stock, US image.
6. Real English (UK)... and other languages.
6a. If you want to set yourself up with English (United Kingdom) not English (American), then you can download an apk from the market to help,
6b. Look for MoreLocale2 from the Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale
6c. Open the App,
6d. Click Options (grid icon)
6c. Add Locale
6d. Label - English (United Kingdom)
6e. Language -en
6f. Country - GB
6g. Click Add and set this as your language.
I don't think this helps with the 'Using an external keyboard still uses the US layout' issue, but if I find a solution to that I'll update/post an update with that.

Having had a Motorola Xoom from launch (in the UK), one thing that fairly quickly started to annoy me was the soon apparent fact that Google's Experience Devices (GEDs) like the Nexus range, didn't seem to apply to the Tablet world, apart from the US Xoom's. (Verizon's 3G and US WiFi models it seems).
Motorola have to modify/develop/push out the updates to anyone else in the world, including Canada and the UK.
If I had realised that at the time I might have thought twice about letting Motorola look after the needs of the Android tablet community, and chosen a different tablet.
Also that they took ages to release the original images for the non-US devices which meant any tweaking or playing could result in non-recoverable bricks...
Luckily - the hardware in the US WiFi, and the Non-US WiFi are identical so the images happily go straight on top - although I, as well as others, were reluctant to flash US Images to the Non-US models because there was no return... until the day after I gave up, flashed the US image on to my UK Xoom and then they released the images - hurray - now we can go back when/if we want to!

03 - Install HTC Sync
- Install software, but then when complete uninstall HTC Sync software (leave HTC Drivers on system)
04 - Download modified HBoot driver

- Connect phone to PC/Laptop with USB cable and install driver in device manager downloaded from step 04.
- When installed reboot phone to normal OS
06 - Prepare phone for Rooting

09 - Root
- Connect phone to PC with USB cable and leave on Charge only (I'm 99% sure it should be set as charge, but if that doesn't work try HTC Sync option, as HTC Sync isn't installed it shouldn't kick off the HTC Sync software)
- Run unrEVOked software and follow instructions on screen (basically hit ok and wait awhile)
10 - Rooted!
- The phone will reboot a few times and settle down and you will then have superuser app installed on phone and will be rooted, and a custom recovery allowing backups and flashing etc. (Clockwork Recovery accessed by VOL DOWN + Power on while phone is off)
- This does not mean you have full access to system partition - as HTC put an extra security protocol in place called S-Off - you can do this with Alpharev - but is not essential for this - http://alpharev.nl/ for more information

18 - WAIT while ROM adjusts itself
- the ROM may hang on the HTC white screen for about 5-10 minutes (apparently can hang for 20 minutes sometimes) while it sorts out the SD-EXT partition, and re-arranges itself on the phone
- Go through the wizard to set up phone, and leave it on for 30 mins - 60 mins while re-downloading apps etc. and setting up phone as it may freeze/hang for a few seconds while it is still reconfiguring itself and settling down.
19 - You are done. You can now restore your SD Card settings and set up your phone again. (note ADFree is installed and when opening will update the hosts and ask for superuser permissions to download+install hosts and block those pesky adverts)
Although I recommend downloading 'battery calibration' app from here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration
and running that through after a day or so to recalibrate the battery.
You can delete the zips from the SD card if you like.
NOTE: You do not need to move Apps to the SD like previously (applications -> move to SD), the ROM has Apps2SD+ built in so the system will handle that on your behalf, applications should still display (on phone)

02 - Download HTC Sync
- Download the latest version of HTC Sync from www.htc.com (the support section)

03 - Install HTC Sync
- Install software, but then when complete uninstall HTC Sync software (leave HTC Drivers on system)
04 - Download modified HBoot driver

05 - Install HBoot driver
- Turn off phone, hold Vol Down and power on till it gets to the recovery menu (white screen with menu options)
- Connect phone to PC/Laptop with USB cable and install driver in device manager downloaded from step 04.
- When installed reboot phone to normal OS
06 - Prepare phone for Rooting
- Go to Settings -> Connect to PC -> untick 'Ask Me' if ticked, and set 'default connection type' to 'Charge only'
- Go to Settings -> Applications -> Tick 'Unknown Sources' if not ticked
- Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Tick 'USB Debugging' if not ticked
07 - Reboot everything, laptop, phone etc.
08 - Download unrEVOked (version 3.21)
- Download unrEVOked and make sure you get version 3.21 for Desire

09 - Root
- Connect phone to PC with USB cable and leave on Charge only (I'm 99% sure it should be set as charge, but if that doesn't work try HTC Sync option, as HTC Sync isn't installed it shouldn't kick off the HTC Sync software)
- Run unrEVOked software and follow instructions on screen (basically hit ok and wait awhile)
10 - Rooted!
- The phone will reboot a few times and settle down and you will then have superuser app installed on phone and will be rooted, and a custom recovery allowing backups and flashing etc. (Clockwork Recovery accessed by VOL DOWN + Power on while phone is off)
- This does not mean you have full access to system partition - as HTC put an extra security protocol in place called S-Off - you can do this with Alpharev - but is not essential for this - http://alpharev.nl/ for more information
11 - NANDroid Backup (optional)
- You can turn off phone, vol down + power on, select recovery, then select backup and restore, and create a NAND backup of your current phone settings (this is saved to SD card in a folder called ClockworkRecovery)
- This should allow you to restore back to current state, but I have found it caused a boot loop with my phone stuck at HTC logo so may be best to do this right before flashing a new ROM - at step 17)
12 - Backup your SD Card data to PC
- Take all the data off the SD card that you want, pictures, music etc.
13 - Download gparted for Partiting SD
- Some people claim you can partition within windows using tools like MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, but it is always advised to use gparted
- Download gparted and burn to CD from the ISO from here:

14 - Partitoning SD
- Connect phone in USB Storage mode to laptop and boot to Gparted CD
- In GParted accept all defaults
- Ensure that the SD Card is set as the device (not your laptop/pc HD!)

- Remove all partitions from SD card
- Create a new FAT32 partition at the start of the SD Card - this MUST be the first partition on the SD card, but leave <2048MB of space at the end (recommended 1024MB, but 512MB can be used, but NOT MORE than 2048MB)
- Create a second partition for EXT3 with the remaining space.
- Apply
- Shut down gparted
15 - Download ROMs + extras

- To keep things as they are now without going too much into AOSP, MIUI, etc. - the main ROM choices are, Gingerbread + Sense 2.1, or Gingerbread + Sense 2.1 WITH 3.0 Parts. However, the 3.0 parts seem a little more unstable than the pure GB + s2.1 roms.

16 - Copy ZIP's to SD
- In USB Mass storage mode copy the 4 zip's to the root of SD card. Simples. (should be the only things on there.)

- Boot phone into Clockwork Recovery (Vol down + Power on) (use vol up/down navigation to get to recovery, and then trackwheel as navigation when in clockwork recovery)
- NAND backup (optional - see step 11)

Data Plans
Frustrating these days how everything is 'going to the cloud' and yet (UK) mobile operators seem to be in the stone age still with data plans.
I used to have a nice unlimited tarrif - which was scrapped and I was moved on to a 500mb a month one - also stated that 'I never use over 500mb' by the person who switched me on to it, and also that the 'Unlimited' plan actually meant 300mb...
I saw a CNN article saying that on average Android users are using 582MB a month - which is a quarter of the tier 1 plan on AT&T @ 2GB.
o2 UK have three options on their site - 100MB, 500MB, 1GB
Why is the top tier only half of AT&T's lowest tier?
Microsoft have adverts on TV for 'Go to the cloud' for photo editing etc.
Apple launched iCloud
Google have Music Beta
HTC are launching HTC Watch and HTC Listen for movie/music purchased/rental from the cloud to mobile and tablet devices - so why are UK mobile operators so behind? surely you can't expect people to live on at most 1GB a month when they are streaming music and movies frequently?
US also have 4G LTE available, and I heard that o2 UK will be 'trialing' it soon - but we seem to be paying for a lot less than the US too... :(

Google Music Beta on Android Device
I think I found a way to speed up the process of getting an Android device...
I read a few posts on the internet about factory reset, restarting, etc. but one I think products the most results is resetting your google account password, sync up with device (it will error and ask for new password) - then change back (if you want).
Wait awhile and/or reboot a few times - I had no joy this morning, but changing password and back again and waiting about 15 minutes has now activated the Xoom music :)

Google Music Beta
I registered for a Music Beta invite yesterday morning, and got the invite by the evening when I got home - so that was pretty quick, as I heard people waited a few days sometimes for an invite.
It took about 24 hours though before Music Beta authorization appeared on my Desire with the 3.0.1 Music app installed which was a bit frustrating as there didn't seem to be any way of speeding this up!
It still isn't activated on my Xoom either... :(
Other than the slow activation on actual Android handsets, I'm fairly impressed.
When driving home from work - I tested it out in the car and using the Data connection there appeared to be only one hiccup from the music and 14 songs downloaded to the cache folder.
As we seem to have rubbish signals around these parts, especially if on a call (with bluetooth headset, obviously) it can lose the signal and cut me off - I was expecting it to fail at some point.
I think my only grief with it at the moment is you need a PC/MAC to be able to upload music in the first place - I would have thought there'd be a way of uploading from an Android device in some way (even if it was an upload option from the browser...)
